JuneTeenth Poster

Hello My name is Jeremy G Bell and I am a Seattle based artist.

In honor of Juneteenth, I have created the attached poster that depicts over 50 noteworthy African Americans throughout history. From Martin Luther King to Nina Simone, this poster gives a brief glimpse into the tenacity and impact the African American has contributed to our country and the world!

Feel free to print this hi resolution 18x24in poster and display it in honor of this year’s Juneteenth celebration!

The qr code in the lower left directs people to a digital hi resolution version of the poster.

Free webinar: “Stump the Archivist”
Washington State Archives will present another edition of “Stump the Archivist,” a Q&A webinar for researchers of all experience levels, on May 20 at 10 a.m.
Bring your questions and a notebook, and chat with Research Archivist Tracy Rebstock! Learn how to use state and local government records in your historical research or family history.
New records are added to our collections all the time. Updates to vital records means more access to birth, death, marriage, and divorce collections. Rebstock will talk about criminal records and then take your questions so you can dig deeper into your research. (Your questions don’t need to be related to criminal records.)

MyHeritage and the 1950 Census

I’m proud to share that the third installment of the indexed 1950 U.S. Census records are now live on MyHeritage, this time from Alaska, New Hampshire, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Last week, we released indexed records for Wyoming, Delaware, Vermont, and American Samoa. Today, an additional 763,697 were added for a total of 1,847,635 records in the 1950 U.S. Census Index.

As before, all these records are free to search, view, and add to your family tree on MyHeritage!

More indexed records are on the way, so stay tuned!

MyHeritage LiveStories Contest

As you probably remember, we released LiveStory, an incredible new feature that makes your photos speak, at RootsTech. The response has been enthusiastic: in the first two weeks, over a quarter of a million LiveStories were created by MyHeritage users. People are just loving this new feature and can’t get over how incredible it is to witness their ancestors and historical figures telling their stories!

We compiled some of our favorite responses — and some amazing examples of LiveStories — from social networks, blogs, and the media in this blog post. We also announced a competition inviting people to share their LiveStories for a chance to win a free MyHeritage Complete plan — details in the post. Be sure to let your friends and followers know so they can enter!

Have you created LiveStories for your own family members yet? Share them with us on social with the hashtag #mylivestory or by email to stories@myheritage.com.

Don’t Be Square — Discover Your Family in the 1950 Census in a Free Webinar

FamilyTree University is sponsoring a free interactive webinar called “Don’t Be Square — Discover Your Family in the 1950 Census.” Thursday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The instructor will be Jim Ericson who manages the marketing efforts of FamilySearch in Europe and North America. Click here to sign up!

We live in a remarkable time! New technologies and process innovations will unlock billions of records for more people than ever. These records can help us to learn and discover information about our ancestors.

The innovations that Ancestry and FamilySearch are applying create a searchable index of the 1950 US Census. They also provide us a glimpse into the future of records publication and accessibility.

The creation of automated indexes using artificial intelligence and handwriting recognition technology—combined with volunteer crowdsourcing to review and improve the results—will usher in a new age of genealogical discovery.

What you’ll learn:

  • What has happened since the 1950 census was released by NARA on April 1st?
  • Why are Ancestry and FamilySearch working together to create a separate index?
  • How will the index created by Ancestry and FamilySearch be made available?
  • How can you participate in allowing everyone to experience this unique piece of history?

MyHeritage adds 5.8 Million records from JewishGen

I’m delighted to tell you that MyHeritage has just published 5.8 million records from 28 collections from JewishGen. The release of these records — made possible thanks to MyHeritage’s collaboration with the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust and its affiliate, JewishGen, a leading website for Jewish genealogy — constitutes the first installment of a licensing agreement that will ultimately make almost all the JewishGen records accessible on MyHeritage.

As you can imagine, this announcement is particularly exciting for me, for obvious reasons 🙂 JewishGen is home to important collections of historical records pertaining to Jewish communities across the globe.

The records in these collections will now benefit from MyHeritage’s powerful matching technologies, which automatically match historical records with the 83 million family trees on MyHeritage. Also, JewishGen records were available to search and view in English only, however, now international users will benefit from MyHeritage’s Global Name Translation Technology™, which allows individuals researching in other languages, such as Hebrew, Russian, or Greek, to search and view these records, with the names translated into their native languages.

I believe this partnership will greatly benefit anyone researching Jewish roots, and I can’t wait to dive in myself to see what I can find. I invite you to spread the news! Feel free to use the above graphic. You can read more about the collections in our blog post here, which includes links to all the collections.

Enjoy!
